    SDPL @ Comic-Con 2011

schwag_buttonWe hope you stopped by the Library's Comic-Con booth and picked up a free button and bookmark! The Library's booth, Booth #2517, was centrally located right behind the CCI boutique in Aisle 2500. Comic-Con International 2011 is now over.

See this year's button on the left-hand side!

The Library has long been associated with books and bespectacled people, but many have seen another face of the library ...comics and tights!

It is a simple fact that kids who read comics eventually grow up to be doctors, lawyers, chefs and even librarians. Not only that, a medium that was once considered to be trivial, campy or even downright subversive has become a dominating force in creative circles and entertainment, such as Alan Moore's epic "Watchmen." Is it any surprise the Library has these materials?

Web comics, movies, video games, and even novelizations have spawned from popular and (not-so-popular) cult hits from the comic world. Hollywood has embraced this, as we can see by a string of movies all adapted from comics; recent examples would be Frank Miller's Sin City, Green Lantern, Thor, and the several X-Men and Spider-Man films. Alright, those were easy (not even worthy of your nerdy brain), but did you know these titles were based on comics, too? The Spartan epic 300, the vampire flick 30 Days of Night, the moody and atmospheric Jack the Ripper tale From Hell and even the drama A History of Violence and the action/thriller the Losers.

Enjoy comics and Comic-Con! See you next year for Comic-Con International 2012!

    SDPL @ Comic-Con 2010

Every year, San Diego's Comic-Con seems to get a little bigger, a little better, and a whole lot more fun. Last year, we talked to so many talented people who stopped by our SDPL booth --artists, authors, bloggers, and even a Jedi or two.

If you stopped in 2010, you may remember our collectible pin set (6 unique designs in total) that was a limited-run SDPL Comic-Con special. For 2011, we unveiled not only a new run of uniquley designed pins, but a talented artist has donated several custom SDPL book marks which were given out in 2011. All badges are now gone.

We had a little geek freak-out when one of the illustrators/artists from "the Simpsons" came by and drew one of our favorite characters right before our eyes! And that was just the first day last year (2010)!

Below are a sampling of the sketches we had made in our booth last year.

Bart SimpsonAs American as apple pie...yellow, spikey-haired apple pie. A huge thanks to the wonderful, creative people who have been making us laugh all this time.

Baby MouseWe were so happy to see this one come in. We check out her books so often to kids, it was a pleasure having her stop by.

Pick Up a BookThis one caught our eye. It's almost as if things with books are interesting to us...
